Higher Learning Institutions

• After matric you can further your studies by enrolling in a higher learning institution such as a university and a college. At a higher education institution you can pursue qualifications such as a higher certificate, diploma, national diploma, degree, honors, master’s degree and a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). In South Africa we have traditional universities, comprehensive universities and university of technologies. These universities serve a different purpose, some offer more diploma courses while others only offer degree courses. South Africa has 50 tvet colleges and a large number of private colleges. It is a responsibility of learners to ensure that the private colleges they enrol in are accredited. The 50 tvet colleges are available in each and every province and in most cases are a walking distance or a taxi away.

Apprenticeships and Learnerships

• After matric learners can opt to do apprenticeship or learnerships to gain a skill and an experience. We are living in an era where skills and practical experiences are more important than theory. Apprenticeships and learnerships prepare an individual for work and in most cases individuals complete these qualifications while working at a specific company. Both apprenticeships and learnerships exist because they aim to increase job opportunities within communities.

Employment

• Seeking employment is another great option after matric. This could include part-time or full-time work. If you are planning to further your studies in the near future it is wise to look for part time jobs. Those with no desire to further their studies in higher learning institutions can opt for a full time job.

Entrepreneurship

• After matric, you may choose to start your own business. This could involve creating your own product or service, which you can market and sell to clients. There are a number of support services available to help you get started.

Gap Year

• A Gap Year is an extended period of time (often a year) taken off by students to gain life experience, do voluntary work, do job shadowing or explore the world before beginning their studies or starting a jop.
